Filling the Gap – forward movement – in 5 transformational Steps
How do we build momentum in our lives, how do we get forward movement that inspires and motivates us? What motivates us to begin to do things in a different way and gain the forward movement we want in our lives. What helps us break out of the caterpillar mode we might find ourselves in? What would it take to become the beautiful butterfly you are meant to be? Certainly, one of the things that helps is knowing what direction you are headed in, knowing what you want to strive for in your life and knowing what you would like to be different in your life in comparison to where you are right now.
Assess Where You Are Currently
So, if by any chance you are in a place right now where you are feeling stuck here is something you can do to help you build some deeper awareness. And to help build some forward movement for yourself.
Take a moment and think about how things are for you currently – what is working for you, and what is not working. What are you happy with? What would you like to be different? It’s a bit like a pros and cons list, but more like a “working for me” and “not working for me” list.
Take some time with this, do it over a week or so to make sure you have covered all aspects of your life. Sometimes it helps to create life categories like home life, work life, personal wellbeing, health. What are the categories in life that are key and important for you? We will all have different categories that will be more or less important for each of us. So, give yourself some time to explore and consider what these are for you.
Visualize Where You Would Like to Be?
OK, so you have spent some time exploring where you are currently, you now are aware of what is working for you at the moment and what might need to change. Now take some time to begin to shape in your mind a vision of how you would like to see yourself in 6 months, a year, 5 years from now. What would you like to see yourself doing in terms of work, in terms of your health, in terms of your relationships, and in terms of your work and home environments?
Don’t hold back on this exercise – give yourself full permission to visualize without boundaries how you would like to see yourself in the future. So, honestly, do take time with this process, let it sit with you for a few days, a week or even longer, until you are sure that the vision you have created feels right for you.
Identify a Starting Point
Once you have that Future Vision of yourself and where you would like to be, take a moment and begin to think about some potential starting points that you could begin with.
Remember here that it is about taking things one step at a time. Rome wasn’t built in a day, and you can’t run before you can walk. Finding patience with this process will be important and will help you look at your progress with more curious eyes. And potentially enable you to make tweaks and amendments to your vision if needed.
Obstacles are Lessons
As you work towards the future you wish for yourself, remember obstacles are there to teach us something about ourselves and help us build the skills we need to continue with our journey. Don’t let obstacles demotivate you – look for the solutions to problems, ask for help, seek advice, get support, reach out to others who have gone through the same thing, explore and consider how you can overcome or work through the obstacles that come your way.
Be Your Own Best Supporter
Take time to build deep self-awareness and self-understanding. Get to know yourself better, explore and identify your strengths, recognize your weaknesses, and explore how you can support yourself around these.
Know who you are emotionally and spiritually. Think about how you can grow as an individual so that you can fully support yourself to achieve that life you truly desire for yourself. Self-love and self-awareness are powerful tools that will empower you in reaching that desired life you have in mind. The key to personal growth, building deeper self-awareness and understanding is working to regularly step out of your comfort zone; those uncomfortable feelings are feelings of personal growth. Embrace those, that is part of what being human is all about.
